No Nut November Rules (2026): Do Wet Dreams, Edging or Sex Count?

Nobody owns No Nut November, so every group chat runs its own rulebook. Here's how the community actually plays it in 2026, with straight answers on wet dreams, edging, sex, porn and free passes, plus what to do the day you slip.

Every year the same arguments start on November 1. Someone wakes up after a wet dream and wants to know if their streak is dead. Someone else insists edging is fine because "technically" nothing happened. The problem is simple: No Nut November rules were never written down by anyone official, so every group chat ends up running its own version.

This guide lays out the No Nut November rules for 2026 the way the community actually plays them, settles the gray areas one at a time (wet dreams, edging, sex, porn, free passes), and covers what to do the day you slip. If you want the full 30-day game plan, read how to survive No Nut November next. This post is about the rules themselves.

No Nut November rules 2026: the short version

  • The one rule everyone agrees on: no orgasm by your own choice from 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1 to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2026.
  • Wet dreams: don't count. They're involuntary.
  • Edging: allowed in the meme version, a fail in every serious version.
  • Sex with a partner: depends on which version you pick. Decide before November 1.
  • Porn: technically allowed under the loosest rules, banned under the ones that work.

Where the No Nut November rules come from

No Nut November started as an Urban Dictionary entry submitted on November 3, 2011, which defined it as a challenge not to masturbate for the month of November. It stayed a niche joke until November 2017, when a tweet about it took off on Reddit and the challenge went mainstream. The r/NoNutNovember community grew from roughly 16,500 members in November 2018 to about 52,000 a year later.

That history matters because it explains why the rules are so inconsistent. There is no organization, no founder and no set of No Nut November official rules. Know Your Meme, which has documented the challenge for years, notes that the exact rules vary between sites and communities: some allow "coupons," others forbid any form of masturbation. What you'll find below is the version that the biggest communities have converged on, sorted into three modes so you can pick one and stop arguing about it.

NNN rules: the three versions (pick one before November 1)

ModeBannedAllowedWho it's for
Standard (the meme)Masturbating to orgasmPorn, edging, sex (in most groups), wet dreamsPeople doing it for the joke and the group chat
SeriousMasturbation and pornSex with a partner (your call), wet dreamsAnyone who wants the month to change something
Hard modeMasturbation, porn, edging, sexting, thirst-trap feeds and "just checking" accountsWet dreams. Partnered sex only if you both agree in advanceGuys using the month to reset a habit they're tired of

The mistake most people make is picking Standard by default and then feeling like they failed when they technically didn't. If porn is the real reason you're doing this, Standard mode lets you keep the exact habit you're trying to break. Choose Serious or Hard mode and write your rules down somewhere you'll see them.

Whichever mode you pick, lock it in before the month starts. Rules you make up at 1 a.m. on November 9 will always favor whatever you want to do at 1 a.m. on November 9.

Do wet dreams count for No Nut November?

No. This is the one gray area that isn't actually gray. A wet dream, or nocturnal emission, is an orgasm that happens during sleep without conscious control. Cleveland Clinic describes them as a normal part of having a body, most common during puberty but possible at any age after it. You cannot choose to have one or not have one, so it can't break a rule that's about what you choose.

Every widely used version of the rules agrees on this, from the meme communities to the stricter recovery-minded groups. If you wake up on November 12 and it's happened, your streak is intact. Change the sheets and get on with your day.

A few things people ask around this:

  • "Will I get more wet dreams during the month?" Some guys report that, especially if they're used to a daily habit. That's a common self-report, not something that's been studied in any serious way, so take it as a possibility rather than a guarantee.
  • "What if I woke up mid-way and finished on purpose?" Then it stopped being involuntary. Be honest with yourself. Most people in that situation know which side of the line they were on.
  • "Does a wet dream reset my streak in a tracker app?" Not unless you log it as a relapse. In Quit & REBOOT, your streak only resets when you tell it to, so an involuntary event doesn't touch your count.

Does edging count in No Nut November?

This is where the rulebook splits. Under Standard rules, edging doesn't count because you didn't finish, and plenty of people play it that way. Under Serious and Hard mode, it counts as a fail, and there are two good reasons for that.

First, in practice, edging is how most No Nut November attempts actually end. You tell yourself you'll stop in time, and then you don't. Second, if your reason for doing the challenge is to loosen a habit's grip, edging keeps the whole loop running: the cue, the content, the arousal, everything except the last ten seconds. You can "win" the month on a technicality while changing nothing.

A simple test for the gray zone: if you'd be embarrassed to log what you just did in a streak tracker, it counted. Treat it as a slip, not a loophole.

The better move is to not get into an edging session in the first place, which means having something to do in the first two minutes of an urge. The 5-step urge protocol we built into the app goes like this: Lock In (name the trigger), Breathe (five slow cycles), Move (twenty reps counted by your iPhone camera), Declare (read your reason), and Status Check (rate the urge again). You can do the same sequence without the app. The full walkthrough is in the urge protocol section of our survival guide.

Quit & REBOOT urge protocol screen: Lock In, Breathe, Move, Declare
Edging usually starts with an urge nobody interrupted. The protocol gives you five things to do before you open anything.

Does sex count in No Nut November?

It depends on the version, and this is the question couples argue about most. The original Urban Dictionary definition was about masturbation specifically. Know Your Meme's guide describes the challenge as thirty days of no self-curated satisfaction and no collaborative satisfaction either, which would include a partner. So both readings have a pedigree.

How it usually breaks down:

  • Standard and most Serious players: partnered sex is allowed. The challenge is about solo habits, and plenty of people in relationships do the month exactly this way.
  • Hard mode and strict groups: any orgasm counts, partner or not. This is the "clean reset" version.
  • Couples doing it together: often agree on a shared version, which can be anything from "no change for us" to "both of us, full month."

Our advice: decide with your partner before November 1 and don't renegotiate mid-month. If your motivation is specifically porn and solo habits, excluding partnered sex is reasonable and most people would say you're still doing the challenge. If you want to test what thirty days without any of it feels like, include it. Either answer is fine as long as it was made in advance and you both know it.

Can you watch porn during No Nut November?

Under the loosest rules, technically yes. The meme only bans finishing. In practice, this is the rule that decides whether your month survives the first weekend.

Watching porn while trying not to finish is edging with extra steps, and it almost always ends the same way. Beyond that, if porn is part of why you're doing the challenge at all, allowing it means you're doing a month of willpower drills while keeping the trigger on the table. That's the hardest possible version of the challenge, not the easiest.

The Serious and Hard mode answer is no porn for the month. Hard mode goes further and includes the "soft" stuff: thirst-trap accounts, suggestive feeds, DMs you only open late at night. Those are gateways, and your algorithm knows it.

The good news is that this rule is the easiest one to enforce with technology instead of willpower. On iPhone, Screen Time's "Limit Adult Websites" setting filters Safari and other supported browsers like Chrome and Firefox. Apple moves that setting around between iOS versions, so if you can't find it, search "adult websites" in Settings. The weak point is that you can switch it off in ten seconds, which is exactly what a 1 a.m. version of you will do. Have someone else set the Screen Time passcode, or use an app that keeps the blocker on so turning it off takes real effort. Full walkthrough: how to block porn on iPhone in every browser.

What is a No Nut November free pass?

A "free pass" or "coupon" is a house rule some groups use: one planned exception during the month that doesn't restart your count. Know Your Meme mentions coupons as one of the ways rules differ between communities. Some chats give one pass for Thanksgiving.

Two things to know. First, a free pass isn't part of any widely accepted version of the rules. If you use one, you're playing your group's game, which is fine, but don't expect anyone outside the chat to recognize it. Second, if you're doing the month to reset a habit, a free pass is a trap. "One planned exception" has a way of becoming the first of several, and a planned slip teaches your brain the same thing an unplanned one does: that the rule bends under pressure.

If NNN is a game for you, define your passes before November 1 and cap them at one. If it's more than a game, skip them.

The rest of the gray areas, answered

QuestionStandardSerious / Hard mode
Does No Nut November apply to girls?Anyone can take part. The rule (no orgasm by choice for 30 days) applies the same way to anyone who signs up.
Does sexting count?AllowedCounts as a slip in Hard mode. It's a gateway, not a loophole.
Do thirst-trap feeds or suggestive accounts count?AllowedHard mode bans them. Mute or unfollow before November 1.
Does morning arousal count? No. It's involuntary, the same as a wet dream. What you do about it is the choice.
Does the challenge end at 11:59 p.m. on November 30?Yes, in your local time zone. If you want to keep going into December, you're not alone: "no nut november and december" is a real search every year.
Can I start late? You can start any day. Just count 30 days from when you start instead of pretending you began on the first.
Are the "No Nut November rules reddit" versions different? Not really. Reddit communities mostly follow the Serious version: no masturbation, no porn, wet dreams don't count, partner sex is up to you.

What happens if you fail No Nut November?

Nothing, officially. Failing No Nut November has no penalty and no scoreboard beyond your group chat. People search "how many people fail No Nut November" every year, and the honest answer is that nobody tracks it. What we can see is that Google searches for the challenge peak in the first week of November and fall off sharply after that, which is at least consistent with a lot of attempts ending early.

The actual danger isn't the slip. It's the reaction to it. Researchers who study relapse call it the abstinence violation effect: you break a rule once, decide the whole month is ruined, and then binge because "it doesn't matter anymore." One slip costs you a day. The all-or-nothing reaction costs you the month.

If it happens:

  1. Restart your count the same day. Not Monday. Not December 1.
  2. Write down the situation: time, place, mood, what app you were in, what you'd been doing for the hour before.
  3. Fix that one gap. If it was bed plus phone at 1 a.m., the phone charges in the kitchen tonight.
  4. Keep the rules you set. Don't downgrade from Serious to Standard because you slipped once. That's the bargaining talking.

Under Hard mode, "failing" also includes things like an edging session or a late-night feed binge, even without an orgasm. Treat those the same way: log it, learn from it, carry on. The point of the stricter rules isn't to make you feel worse. It's to give you more data about where your habit actually lives.

Quit & REBOOT streak dashboard showing a 50-day streak
A visible count is easier to protect, and one logged slip is a data point, not a verdict on the month.

If you're doing the challenge seriously, it helps to log urges and not just slips. By the second week you'll see your pattern: the same two or three times of day, the same room, the same app. That's the information that makes December easier than November. The survival guide covers the first 24 hours after a slip in more detail.

Why the rules matter less than your reason

You'll see big claims about what No Nut November does for you: a testosterone surge, superpowers, some kind of aura. Go in knowing what the evidence actually says, because it changes which rules are worth following.

  • Testosterone: the "day 7 spike" people quote comes from a 2003 study of 28 men that was retracted in 2021. There's no solid evidence that a month of abstinence meaningfully or lastingly changes testosterone.
  • Sexual wellbeing: a 2025 study by Garas, Levang and Pukall in The Journal of Sexual Medicine followed No Nut November participants before and after the month and found no real difference in sexual desire, pleasure or function compared with people who didn't take part. The month didn't help and didn't hurt.
  • Long-term health: a 2016 study of roughly 32,000 men in European Urology linked more frequent ejaculation with a lower risk of prostate cancer. One month off isn't going to move that needle either way, but it means NNN isn't a health hack.

So if the biology is mostly a wash, why bother with rules at all? Because for a lot of guys, the thing worth testing isn't their hormones. It's the habit. Compulsive sexual behaviour disorder is recognized by the World Health Organization in ICD-11, and many men who would never meet that bar still feel porn takes more of their time and attention than they'd choose. Thirty days under clear rules shows you, fast, how much of your routine runs on autopilot.

That's also why the mode you pick matters. Standard mode tests willpower. Serious and Hard mode test the habit. If you came here to find out whether you can keep watching porn and still "count," you already know which version you need.

Your No Nut November rule card for 2026

Before Sunday, November 1, write this down and send it to one person or post it in your group:

  1. Mode: Standard, Serious or Hard.
  2. Partnered sex: in or out. Agreed with your partner if you have one.
  3. Porn and soft content: what's banned, specifically. Name the apps.
  4. Free passes: none, or exactly one, defined now.
  5. If I slip: restart the same day, log the trigger, keep the mode.
  6. Why I'm doing this: one honest sentence. You'll read it during urges.

Then set up the things that make the rules hold without you: the blocker in every browser, the phone out of the bedroom, the feeds cleaned up. There's a pre-November checklist in the survival guide if you want the full list.

The rules are the easy part. The guys who make it to November 30 picked a version that matched their reason, wrote it down while they were calm, and made the rules harder to break than to keep.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules of No Nut November?

The one rule every version shares: no orgasm by your own choice from November 1 to November 30. Beyond that, groups differ. Standard mode bans masturbating to orgasm. Serious mode also bans porn. Hard mode adds edging, sexting and thirst-trap feeds. Pick a mode and write it down before November 1.

Do wet dreams count for No Nut November?

No. A wet dream (nocturnal emission) happens during sleep without conscious control, so almost every version of the challenge treats it as involuntary. Your streak continues. The challenge is about what you choose to do while awake.

Does edging count in No Nut November?

In the strict, meme version, no, because you didn't finish. In practice, edging is how most attempts end, so the serious and hard-mode versions treat it as a fail. If your goal is to break a habit, count it.

Does sex count in No Nut November?

It depends on the version. The original joke covered any orgasm, including with a partner. Many people in relationships use a partner-exempt version where only solo activity counts. Decide with your partner before November 1 and don't change the rule mid-month.

Can you watch porn during No Nut November?

Under the loosest rules, technically yes, as long as you don't finish. Almost nobody who takes the month seriously allows it, because watching porn while trying not to finish is the fastest way to fail. If porn is the reason you're doing the challenge, ban it.

What is a No Nut November free pass?

A free pass, sometimes called a coupon, is a group-chat house rule that lets you take one planned exception without restarting your count. It isn't part of any common version of the rules. If you're using NNN to reset a habit, skip the pass entirely.

Does No Nut November apply to girls?

Anyone can take part. The meme was written about men, but the rule (no orgasm by choice for 30 days) applies the same way to anyone who signs up for it.

What happens if you fail No Nut November?

Nothing official. The real risk is the all-or-nothing reaction researchers call the abstinence violation effect, where one slip turns into a binge. Restart your count the same day, note what triggered it, and keep going. Twenty-eight clean days out of thirty is still a strong month.
